Next up on the Q and A is the ever so stylish Adam Smith, he rocks a beard he has a Springer Spaniel just like myself, what more can a man do? His beard has got him some great exposure including a photo shoot for Monocle Madness appearing on their website. Adam’s vintage style is portrayed in this great little read, I hope you enjoy!
What style would you say your beard is?
I am unsure, “Modern Gent?” I suppose it depends on how I dress that day, some days I am more “Hipster” than “Modern Gent” I don’t really like how hipster is being used as a derogatory word to describe men with beards and top knots. I have a beard and sometimes a top knot, and it doesn’t mean I am anything like anyone else who has these 2 features, its people being lazy, writing what will get them the most click bait, it really annoys me.
What made you grow a beard in the first place?
I have a fairly strange answer for this, as I really like shaving. It’s weird, I’ve read blogs on proper shaving with a safety razor and I have all the paraphernalia that goes with it. I had my last shave on 1st of April 2014. It is now a year old. I think it came from beard envy, I was getting my haircut and the Creative Director, Ash at Air in Hull had a very fine beard. We were chatting and I just decided that time was right. I already had a handlebar moustache and a stupidly long soul patch, so I thought why not go the whole hog and a year later here I am.
Not particularly, I just wanted a big beard, squared off with a fade. The problem I have is that my beard is really curly (see above) so it took its time to look like a full beard, which is annoying as the hairs when straight reach to my nipples….
How do you trim and groom your beard?
Combination of methods, Ash who cuts my hair gives it a trim and a shape every 5-6 weeks and in between times I keep on top of it with a pair of scissors at home. I am constantly combing it, the more you comb it the more you train it to grow in the right direction (something I learnt from having the moustache)
How do you keep your beard clean and skin healthy?
It gets a wash every day in the shower, I use my shampoo and conditioner the same as my hair, then my face gets a wash with a charcoal cleanser, which also helps finish off cleaning the beard. Conditioner goes on last. My beard is now at a length where it is very easy to not be dry properly. I cannot count the amount of times I have realised once I am ready for work that my shirt is wet thanks to my beard.
What products do you use from beard trimmers to grooming sets, oils, conditioners and how do you rate them?
I don’t like beard oils, they make the Pube Beard look even more like pubes. I have used “beardbase” from BeardBase.co.uk it feels and smells great but just exacerbates the pube beard look for me. I use good old fashioned scissors and a comb – I think it is about time I bought some new bespoke stuff! My moustache is waxed with “Firehouse Wacky Tacky” I wanted a wax that stood up to everything a music festival could throw at it – rain, wind, sun, snow, beer and people playing with it. It’s great, use it!
Any tips and techniques to share with the bearded readers?
I used to play with my beard near my chin and form it into a point, don’t do this unless you want a pointy beard. If you want a square beard you need to use the back of your hand and move up from your neck to your beard, it gives it a squared off look.
Are you planning on shaving your beard off anytime soon?
Not a chance. I think I would be single very quickly if this happened.
Well considering how much Adam enjoys shaving he has a top notch beard! Thanks for taking the time out to answer our questions and we wish you every success with your beard going forward.
